Ikuko Furuya
A Japanese Calligraphy Artist

After mastering the traditional Chinese writing style and techniques by studying under a renowned Chinese calligrapher, Ms. Ikuko Furuya explored other brush-writing skills, including the traditional and modern (practical) Japanese calligraphy styles. She established a new style of contemporary artistic calligraphy using original brush techniques and became one of the pioneers in the field of calligraphic brush art.

Ms. Fruya’s works are a contemporary take on calligraphy, beyond traditional calligraphy style. She believes in “Koto-Dama,” the mystical powers that dwell in words, and carefully chooses the right words based on her inspiration. She harmoniously blends a variety of materials and calligraphy, including antique kimono, fabric and traditional Japanese handmade paper. She is also capable of managing various brush sizes and produces a wide range of works. Her biggest work is over 2 m (6.5 ft.) long and 1 m (3.2 ft.) wide.
